Young couple from Kedah ready to take on life as adults
KULIM: Some may see it as just puppy love, but for Mohd Fahmi Alias, it is not mere infatuation that led him to take Nor Fazira Saad — who will just be turning 13 next month — as his bride.
Mohd Fahmi, 19, who helps his father run the family’s oil palm transport business, said he was man enough to take up the responsibility as a husband and would also not stop his young wife from continuing her studies.
“I am ready to shoulder my responsibility as a husband and I promise to take care of her for the rest of my life,” he said, when met at his family’s house in Kampung Naga Lilit in Padang Serai, near here, yesterday.
Nor Fazira said she was ready to assume the responsibility of being Mohd Fahmi’s life partner.
The couple’s marrriage was solemnised at the Kampung Padang Cina mosque, near the bride’s family home, on Nov 17 after the Syariah Court in Kulim gave its consent on Nov 7.
The family of the groom had a doa selamat (thanksgiving) as part of the sambut menantu tradition to welcome the new daughter-inlaw into the clan yesterday.
The couple looked resplendent in their white Malay attire amid the gathering of family members, relatives and close friends at the simple event.
Asked if he was worried about society’s perception to their marriage, Mohd Fahmi said: “It is good that we are marrying early, rather than risk being in an illicit relationship.
“Since our respective families have given their blessings, there is no reason to further delay this union,” he said, adding that they have known each other for many years.
Nor Fazira, who stopped schooling after her UPSR examination last year, said she intends to continue her studies as her husband had encouraged her to do so.
“God willing, I will continue my secondary studies after settling down,” she said.
