Rising anxiety over implementation of hudud
PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan Government’s refusal to budge from its hair salon ruling has reinforced anxiety that PAS’ hudud law will apply to non-Muslims, said MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.
He expressed concern that hudud would be implemented on nonMuslims should PAS and Pakatan Rakyat come to power.
“It is a classic example that if PAS comes to power and its president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang becomes prime minister, there will be more of such laws in place. It shows that PAS can implement hudud on everyone,” he said yesterday.
Chua also called on DAP to take a firm stand and openly state whether it would support its Pakatan partner should PAS implement hudud.
“They should inform the nonMuslims of the effects of hudud instead of repackaging PAS.
“The concern that hudud laws will be applied to non-Muslims is very real.
“That is why MCA has consistently informed the public of its implications,” he added.
MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker said the ruling would adversely affect the industry, adding that plans were under way to hold haircut exhibitions to protest against Kelantan’s gender-segregation rules.
“We want to show that there is nothing wrong with a man cutting a woman’s hair or vice-versa.
“We need to stand up and protest this Taliban-style of archaic law, which infringes on international civil and constitutional rights,” said Ti, who tweeted yesterday that a charity cut to support unisex hair salons would be held on Nov 28 at Mid Valley Megamall.
Ti said they were also in contact with hair salon owners in Kelantan to find out whether they needed assistance to take the matter to court for a legal interpretation.
In GEORGE TOWN, DAP chairman Karpal Singh said the hair salon ruling was wrong and unconstitutional.
“This is definitely not a step in the right direction.
“This ruling lacks legal validity and I reiterate my call for affected salon operators not to pay the fines.
“Take it to court – seek a court ruling immediately,” Karpal said yesterday.
At PAS’ recent muktamar, Hadi assured non-Muslims that they would not be subjected to hudud laws and that Pakatan’s coalition partners had agreed to disagree on hudud.
