IPOH: Two families here received benefit payments from the Social Security Organisation (Socso) following the deaths of their sole breadwinners who had worked with highway maintanance company Propel.

Socso board member Datuk Dr S. Vasan handed over a cheque for RM1,500 for funeral expenses and another cheque for RM1,400 as monthly pension to Arbawiyah Baharom, 58, the widow of subPropel worker Mohd Shafie Ismail, 56, at the family home in Taman Shatin Baru here yesterday.

Socso also gave RM1,500 for funeral expenses and RM2,655 monthly pension to housewife Nor Salina Hamid, the widow of Propel employee Sharuddin Abdul Aziz, 51.

The cheques were handed to her by Bukit Chandan assemblyman Datuk Wan Mohamad Khairil Wan Ahmad at Nor Salina’s family home in Kampung Masjid Menora in Kuala Kangsar.

Mohd Shafie and Sharuddin were among four people killed when a trailer laden with chocolates rammed into them while they were laying cables along the left lane at the KM294 of the North-South Expressway on Nov 21.

Four other Propel workers were also injured in the incident.

Dr Vasan said the permanent monthly pension payment for Arbawiyah was only for the widow as the late Mohd Shafie’s children were aged above 21.

Arbawiyah, a housewife, who could not contain her sadness during the cheque presentation, thanked Socso, the media and other quarters for their assistance and concern.

Arbawiyah, who has two working sons, said she would use the money for her daily expenses.

Nor Salina, 47, has three children aged 14, 16 and 18. — Bernama
