Gang Zawa member held over shootout

Suspect nabbed while walking with family

KOTA BARU: A suspected member of the notorious Gang Zawa, linked to a shootout with cops last month, has been detained by the police.

The 25-year-old was nabbed while he was walking outside a lodge in Jalan Seri Cemerlang at about 8am on Saturday.

Also picked up were a woman, believed to be his wife, and a five-month-old baby. The woman is in her 20s.

Policemen seized a revolver, believed to have been used in five robberies in several districts in Kelantan, and a bottle of heroin from the suspect.

“The man could shed light on the Oct 30 shootout in Gua Musang, which resulted in two policemen suffering gunshot wounds,” Kelantan police chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said at a press conference here yesterday.

In that incident lance corporal Mohd Samsul Anuar Mohd Adnan, 34, from the Paloh police station, and corporal Mat Raduan Mat Hussan, 50, of the Macang police were hurt while a suspected robber was shot dead.

The incident occurred at the 45k45km KKota t Baru-Kuala Krai road in Kampung Kemuning, Machang.

Jalaluddin said police were now looking for the remaining members of the gang.

On another matter, Jalaluddin said police had received 11 reports from non-government­al organisati­ons over Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s alleged accusation that Umno was an apostate party.

The Mentri Besar , who is also PAS spiritual advisor, had purportedl­y made the remark at the party’s annual muktamar here last week.
