Don’t tolerate mob action

I READ with grave concern the news report of an angry mob that overturned a Road Transport Department (JPJ) vehicle and set it ablaze in Sitiawan “Mob torches RTD vehicle after pile-up” ( The Star, Jan 12).

It was reported that the incident could have been the result of actions initiated by the JPJ officers themselves.

It is a very sad and scary situation when people on the street decide to take matters in their own hands and turn the incident into mob-style violence.

I urge the relevant authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and stern action must be taken against those involved so that it will not become a precedent in future.

Those members of the public who took the law into their own hands should be charged in court as soon as possible.

And if the whole incident was instigated by the RTD officers as alleged, then there should not be a cover-up by the Government.

The officers, if found guilty, should be punished severely according to the law to send a message that such dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.

Such an incident is detrimental to the peace and stability of our beloved nation.

What make matters worse is that people like Sitiawan assemblyman, Ngeh Koo Ham himself who had reportedly sent out tweeter messages blaming the JPJ for causing the accident.

This matter is bigger than politics, Mr Assemblyman! This is about peace and stability of our nation.

As a politician on whatever side of the fence you are on, must play a more responsible role to keep our nation intact rather than further instigate people for your political mileage.

It is best to leave it to the police to investigate.

Our country is not a lawless nation and each of us should be working hard towards building and enhancing a civilised society. M. KHIR Johor Baru
