Owner of dead mare wants to know autopsy results first

PETALING JAYA: The owner of the five-year-old mare that died after it was allegedly mounted and attacked by an Arabian stallion will wait for the post-mortem results before deciding on what to do next.

Mohamad Nor Arshad said the carcass of the mare, which was a local breed pony, was at Universiti Putra Malaysia veterinary hospital for post-mortem.

“I will only know what to do next after I receive the autopsy report,’’ said Mohamad Nor, a 35-year-old businessman.

He said his main concern now was to care for the mare’s five-monthold foal, which was still suckling.

“I am now looking for ways to feed the foal with food that would match the nutrients in the mother’s milk,” he said.

The mare, named Siti, died on Jan 21 six days after it was boarded at a stable in Kajang.

Luckily, Siti’s foal Sydney was spared of any harm and has since been relocated to Mohamad Nor’s friend’s ranch in Semenyih.

Mohamad Nor said he was concerned over the stallion’s conduct and hoped the stable had informed the horse’s owner about the incident.

“The stallion has to be re-evaluated because of its aggressive behaviour and before there’s a possible repeat of what had happened,” he said.

He added that he missed Siti, which was valued between RM2,000 and RM3,000, very much and wished she had not had to endure so much pain and suffering.

Mohamad Nor said he would consult the Malaysian Equine Council once he received the post-mortem report.

When contacted, Veterinary Services Department (DVS) directorgeneral Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin offered to help.

He said Mohamad Nor could contact the DVS for help to determine what might have transpired.

“We will get some of our experienced people to act as independent observers or investigators to help in the matter,” he added.
