Retrieved junked mail being held as evidence

-

PETALING JAYA: The thousands of undelivered mail found dumped in a Ukay Heights ravine two weeks ago are still being held by the police pending an investigation.

Pos Malaysia said the mail was being held at its Bukit Raja delivery branch as evidence.

“The retrieved mail is currently under the custody of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) as evidence for their investigation. Therefore, we are unable to sort or process the mail until the investigation is completed and we receive clearance from PDRM,” it said yesterday.

The Star previously reported that the mail, which included cheques, bank statements and bills, was found in the ravine by residents on July 20.

The mail was retrieved the next day by 41 Pos Malaysia staff.

It was then brought to the Bukit Raja delivery branch for safekeeping.

The three postmen responsible for dumping the mail have been identified and sacked.

Pos Malaysia Group chief executive officer Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said the errant postmen could be charged under Section 64 of the Postal Services Act, which carries a fine of not more than RM100,000 or a jail term of not more than two years or under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years with whipping, and a fine.

The company, he said, was also pushing for a greater enforcement on its services.

Among the measures expected to be rolled out in the next few months included appointing 120 Pos Malaysia enforcement officers to monitor mail delivery nationwide.

Regular internal briefings would also be conducted, and that “highcalibre” postmen would be appointed as change agents.

In the meantime, information postcards would be sent to residents in affected areas, which Pos Malaysia said would allow them to give comments on improving mail delivery.

The exercise would also be extended to all addresses in Malaysia.
