NUSAJAYA: Ten-year-old triplets Afiq Hairuddin, Aziq and Alif are looking forward to celebrating Hari Raya, and it is easy to understand why.

Last year, they managed to collect RM700 each throughout the month-long celebration, and this year, they are targeting RM1,500 each.

The eldest, Afiq, said they would keep their money in the bank.

“So far, we have saved about RM3,000 each from our Hari Raya money, and hopefully, the amount will increase to RM5,000 this year,” he said when met at a hypermarket here.

The three brothers were among 80 individuals from poor families in the Johor Baru and Pontian districts who were treated to a “shopping spree” by the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ), which allocated about RM60,000 to enable the less fortunate in the state to enjoy the occasion.

Each recipient was given RM150 to be spent on clothes, shoes, scarves or cookies.

The triplets lost their fisherman father in 2005. Their mother who works at an electronics factory is the sole breadwinner.

Meanwhile, MAIJ assistant director for tithes, alms and endowment, Mustafa Omar, said RM5.7mil of tithes had been allocated to help 43,000 individuals who fall under the hardcore poor category in Johor this Hari Raya.
