Penang needs long-term traffic solution

-

NO amount of one-way roads, widening roads, building ring roads and increasing the number of buses can solve the horrendous traffic situation on Penang island.

The road system has reached saturation point.

Suggestions to increase the number of Rapid buses will not only cause more traffic congestion but will also cause further pollution and environmental damage.

The island needs better traffic management.

Firstly, Penang drivers need to improve their attitude and driving skills. They stop and park wherever they like and to curb this, law enforcement should be stepped up without compromise.

During peak hours, heavy and slow-moving vehicles should be prohibited, but instead we see forklifts and backhoes moving in various parts of the island during the morning rush hours.

A comprehensive park and ride facility should be provided to complement the efficient Rapid Bus service, especially in high ridership routes.

The next step should be to construct multi-storey car parks, as statistics show that the number of vehicles have outnumbered the population with a ratio of two cars to an individual.

To address this situation, the ultimate solution would be the introduction of a monorail, light rail transit and a tram service with a park and ride system.

Another long-term option would be a bus transit system which has proven to be a success in Curitiba, Brazil and Jakarta, Indonesia.

The authorities should also consider zoning certain areas into congestion pricing zones to allow only buses in them during a specific time.

Dedicated bus lanes should also be introduced for better mobility of buses. This would also help in an improved turnaround of equipment for the bus company.

Penang’s second bridge link should have had a rail option. A rail commuter service across could have been extended from the mainland. This would have controlled a substantial amount of cars moving into the island.

A good urban traffic planning and effective implementation by the state government is worth thinking about. PJ GOMES Georgetown
