By-election in Sungai Limau to be held by Nov 27
Humble and interesting man sira@thestar.com.my PETALING JAYA: The by-election in Sungai Limau following the death of its assemblyman Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak will be held by Nov 27.
Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof said the EC had 60 days from today to hold polls.
“We will hold a special meeting to fix the dates for nomination and polling after the Kedah speaker informs us officially in writing (of the vacancy),” he added.
There would be no early voting as there were no police and soldiers registered as voters in the constituency, he said.
“We have two Sungai Limau constituents registered as overseas voters. Postal voting would be open to media personnel and EC workers on duty that day,” Aziz said.
Azizan, who was Kedah PAS commissioner, served one term as the 10th Mentri Besar of Kedah after the 12th general election in 2008.
Conveying his condolences to the family of Azizan, Aziz described him as a good man.
“He was also very good at cracking jokes,” said Aziz.
In the 2013 general election four months ago, Azizan retained the seat with a 2,774-vote majority in a four-cornered fight.
Azizan was hospitalised a day after polling following complications due to diabetes that later resulted in amputation of both his lower limbs.
He died at 11.05am yesterday.
