Cornered criminal opens fire at police team
PETALING JAYA: The recent drug-fuelled gangland violence continued as another notorious gangster died in a shootout with police yesterday.
The dramatic shootout saw police exchanging fire with the gunman after he opened fire at a team of policemen.
The policemen had cornered him at an deserted road near Ulu Yam, Selangor around 1am yesterday.
A police source said the 30-year-old member of the notorious Gang 24 in Klang, was spotted by a special police task force from Selangor CID, as he was driving along Jalan Sg Tua, Gombak shortly before the shooting incident.
As the team tried to approach the man, he quickly sped off, thus forcing police to give chase.
The high speed chase lasted for a few kilometers where the gangster, later identified as L. Logaswaran, tried to ram the police vehicles before he lost control and crashed near Ulu Yam.
Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Ali Ahmad said the man got out of his car and fired several shots at the police team including hitting one of the police officers on his bullet proof vest.
“They were forced to return fire at the suspect, who was shot dead,” he said when contacted.
The source said police seized a revolver with bullets beside Logaswaran’s body. They also found a machete, gloves, mask and some bullet casings in the car which had been reported stolen.
The task force had been tracking Logaswaran, who has a drug related criminal record, in connection with the brutal kidnap and murder of a teenager, 19-year-old M. Yogaraj from Taman Laksamana, Klang.
The youth went after he was “arrested” by several men, dressed as police, showed up at his house around 2am on March 9.
Yogaraj’s body was later discovered with his arms, legs and head chopped off by a river near Pulau Indah, Selangor.
The source said police had also arrested Logaswaran’s accomplice a few weeks ago in connection with the kidnap-cum-murder.
Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar praised the task force in taking down the gangster in his official twitter account.
