KUALA LUMPUR: Embattled MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel’s faction claims that more than 1,000 branch chairmen will gather at the Registrar of Societies (RoS) to directly clarify issues.

Vice-president Tan Sri S. Balakrishnan, who is backing Palanivel, said the meeting would be held at 11am tomorrow.

Balakrishnan said the meeting was to set the record straight and not challenge any directive of the RoS or the Prime Minister.

“I feel the directive of the RoS has been misinterpreted by the other faction which led them to issue a termination letter to Palanivel and four other members.

“Looking at how messy the situation has become, the branch chairmen want an explanation from the RoS directly,” he said, adding that this was necessary as earlier attempts to meet RoS director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah had failed.

Datuk S. Sothinathan said Palanivel’s faction would hold nominations for branch polls on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the faction led by deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam, who has declared himself acting president, said documents had been sent to more than 3,400 branches nationwide to prepare for branch nominations and polls fixed from July 10-12 and July 19-21.

Vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan claimed that many phantom MIC branches were formed after the 2013 general election.

MIC Youth chief C. Sivarraajh claimed 96 of the 155 of the wing’s leaders who attended a meeting yesterday were backing Dr Subramaniam.

He said most were agreeable to what was being championed by Dr Subramaniam.
