KOTA KINABALU: Help is on the way for the family of toddler Nurhasyikin Jainuddin as repair work on their damaged house is expected to be finished in time for Raya.

According to local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor, the Tuaran District Office will carry out repairs beginning today.

“We realise the family has gone through a traumatic experience and we want to ensure they will at least have a home for Aidilfitri,” said the Sulaman assemblyman after visiting the damaged house at Kampung Dunggang.

Hajiji said about nine houses in Tuaran were damaged by strong winds yesterday.

Nurhasyikin’s mother Nurhaibah Nasib had placed the toddler in a sarong hammock tied to a beam when a strong gust blew the hammock into the air at about 12.15am.

Nurhaibah tried to grab Nurhasyikin but could not hold onto her second child. Nurhaibah then searched for her daughter with her husband Jainuddin Hasim, her cousin Mohd Hasrul Sid and neighbours.

Half an hour later, they found Nurhasyikin crying in the middle of a muddy padi field.
