Anselm cheers Jonker Walk
DJ Jeremy Teo joins the cheerleading team in the street salute
MALACCA: There was a great buzz at Jonker Walk as the Anselm cheerleading team performed a routine with Red FM deejay Jeremy Teo.
Teo paid Anselm a surprise visit at their school, SMK Infant Jesus Convent, as part of the CHEER Celebrity Supporter contest, which saw six secondary school teams pairing up with a celebrity.
Each celebrity will learn a cheerleading stunt from the “adopted team”. The girls from Anselm taught Teo how to do an extension with him at the “base” holding up one of the cheerleaders.
“It’s much harder than it looks. It’s a combination of balance and strength, so I have a lot of respect for them,” said Teo. “I don’t think I’ve lifted anybody up in that manner before in my life.”
Despite hosting CHEER, Malaysia’s top cheerleading competition for the past seven years, Teo said that he did not get to hang out with the cheerleaders.
So when he met Anselm, he got a better idea of the work needed to be part of a cheerleading team.
“I spoke to their captain Lee Zhi Wee. She said they would train for three hours almost daily.”
Lee, 17, said her members were feeling more motivated than ever for the annual CHEER finals next month, thanks to Teo’s support.
“We have some new members this year and a few of them lack confidence. But when Jeremy showed up, it boosted our confidence,” she said.
“Our goal is to be the first team from Malacca to bring back the CHEER trophy. We want to make Jeremy proud.”
Two more celebrities – dancer and YouTube star Dennis Yin, and Red Breakfast WTF show hosts JJ Fernandez and Ezra Mei – will visit their respective teams next week.

All nine celebrity supporters – the others being Reuben Kang, Marianne Tan, Jared Lee, Joseph Germani and Prakash Daniel – will be attending the CHEER finals on Aug 15 at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. Admission is free and it is open to the public.
