IPOH: Recipients of “state awards” given out by unscrupulous people posing as royalty are not immune from the law said the police.

Acting Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said claims that these recipients would not face any legal action were not correct.

fraud. Those issuing these surat kuning (yellow letters) are also not above the law and they could be subjected to legal action,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

He said police were investigating the matter under Section 420 of the Penal Code and those found guilty could be jailed or fined under the law.

It was reported in a Malay daily that individuals issuing the yellow letter and those receiving the “awards” were immune from the law.

The Perak Government said earlier this week that those posing as royalty and giving out state awards could face legal action.

DCP Hasnan said police have also urged people not to buy or obtain any “state awards” through illegitimate and doubtful channels.

He said legitimate awards were those recognised by the state and those bestowed by the Perak Sultan.

“Anyone who feels they have been cheated with regards to these unlawful awards are urged to lodge a police report,” he said.

DCP Hasnan also said police are currently trying to track down individuals who have received the “awards” to facilitate investigations.

“The people are advised once again not to be involved with any transactions to get illegitimate state awards to avoid legal action,” he said.
