Jazz queen Sheila Majid to perform charity concert for WAO
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian jazz queen Datuk Sheila Majid (pic) will commemorate three decades of singing success with a charity concert for the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO).
The one-night performance on Friday, April 22, will be at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. Seats are available with donations of RM500, RM1,000 and RM1,500.
Guests can enjoy an unforgettable evening while lending support to WAO to help women and children.
The fund raising effort is being led by former WAO executive director Ivy Josiah and Manulife Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Dr Zaha Rina Zahari.
“There might be an economic slowdown but unfortunately, there is no slow down when it comes to domestic violence. In fact, it accelerates during financial hardships,” said Josiah in a statement.
Dr Zaha Rina added that when a woman cries for help, it is a plea not just for her, but for her children, her family, and for their future.
“As a society, we must offer protection for all those who need it. It is only right that those of us who are able, help those who are unable to help themselves.”
In 1982, WAO opened Malaysia’s first shelter for women, offering telephone and face-to-face counselling.
WAO is an independent, non-religious, NGO in Malaysia, committed to eliminating violence against women and promoting women’s rights.
In 2015, the WAO hotline at 03-7956 3488 reached out to 1,834 women in the country.
For concert tickets, call the WAO (03-79575636) or email: womensaidorg@gmail.com. All donations are eligible for tax exemption receipts.
