Cops: protest march organisers breached PAA
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will call up organisers and participants of a protest held against the arrest of PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.
City police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh said those taking part in the march from the Parliament House to the Bukit Aman police headquarters yesterday had breached the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
“We will record their statements,” he said, adding that those involved should know the requirement of giving police a 10-day notice prior to any demonstration.
Rafizi was arrested in front of Parliament House on Tuesday under the Official Secrets Act to facilitate investigations over claims he made against the Armed Forces Fund Board.
Scores of Opposition politicians and supporters participated in yesterday’s march, among them veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
In an unrelated case, police have completed investigations on former soldier Mohd Ali Baharom, also known as Ali Tinju, for leading members of the “Red-shirt movement” to hand over a memorandum on the Penang chief minister’s controversial bungalow purchase.
Comm Amar said Ali Tinju recently had his statement recorded on the March 31 incident, in which he reportedly led some 20 members of Pertubuhan Pembela Nasib Melayu Malaysia and Jaringan Melayu Malaysia to the DAP office in Jalan Pudu.
“We have completed the investigations and will refer to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further instructions,” he said.
