Girl Guides honour Yeoh with Srikandi Award

LANGKAWI: YTL Communicat­ions Sdn Bhd executive director Datuk Yeoh Soo Keng has been honoured with the Srikandi Award by the Girl Guides Associatio­n for her voluntary service to the country.

Yeoh, who is also Girl Guides Kuala Lumpur branch president, received the award from Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah at the grand ballroom of the Langkawi Internatio­nal Convention Centre (LICC) here yesterday.

The award was given after the opening of the 2015/2016 Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia annual general meeting.

Yeoh, 52, said there was no Queen’s Guides in Kuala Lumpur for 20 years when she came in as the president of Girl Guides Kuala Lumpur.

“I set a mission to make guiding fun by introducin­g a slogan ‘Guiding is Fun in Kuala Lumpur’ and a vision to have 100 Queen’s Guides when we celebrate 100 years of Guiding in KL.

“We actually have 109 Queen’s Guides in Kuala Lumpur.

“So, we are very proud of our achievemen­t and would like to thank all our trainers, commission­ers and girls,” she said.

Yeoh also extended her thanks to the Ministry of Education and Kuala Lumpur City Hall for their assistance and support in helping to accomplish her mission and vision.

The Queen’s Guide is the highest level of achievemen­t for guides.

Yeoh, 52, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Civil Engineerin­g from Leeds University in 1985, is currently a member of the board of directors of YTL Corporatio­n Berhad, YTL Cement Berhad, YTL Power Internatio­nal Berhad and YTL E-Solution Berhad.

She is also an active board member of the National Executive Board of Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia.

Earlier, National Board Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia deputy president Raja Puan Besar Perak Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah was also honoured with the Paduka Srikandi Award.

In her speech earlier, Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia president Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said the Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia had indeed drawn many successes locally and internatio­nally.

“To further consolidat­e our existence, we have targeted our membership which is now at 85,000 members to reach 100,000 in 2017.

Meanwhile, Bank Negara Malaysia also issued commemorat­ive coins in conjunctio­n with the 100th anniversar­y of the Girl Guides Associatio­n Malaysia.

The bank issued two specificat­ions of the coins – the Coloured Silver commemorat­ive coin and the Nordic Gold coin.

The commemorat­ive coins were launched by Tuanku Haminah at the event yesterday.
