Scholars rewarded for hard work
STUDENTS who excelled academically and in extra-curricular activities from 23 Chinese independent schools in the country have been awarded scholarships.
Offered by the Sunway Education Group, the annual award for Chinese independent schools comes under six categories.
Thye include the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship, The Chancellors’ Scholarship of Sunway University and Lancaster University, Sunway Sports Scholarship, Sunway Music Talent Scholarship, Sunway Excellence Scholarship and Sunway University CIS-ECA Scholarship.
The top three schools with the highest number of scholars and scholarships awarded were Hin Hua High School, Klang with 37 scholars, Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur with 28 scholars and Tsun Jin High School, Kuala Lumpur with 19 scholars.
Congratulating the scholarship recipients, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University senior executive director Elizabeth Lee encouraged the students to gain new knowledge, experiences and friends.
“I hope the students will use this opportunity to build lifelong friendships during their time in Sunway,” she said.
Ng Hsin Er who was a student at Hin Hua High School, said the scholarship will help rreduce her family’s financial burden.
“I will continue to stay with them while studying,” she said, adding that she will be pursuing her undergraduate degree in International Hospitality Management at Sunway University.
Lim Wei Lun, formerly a student of Chung Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur is currently in the Victoria University Bachelor of Business programme.
Scholarship recipients can pursue studies in a number of programmes offered by Sunway University and Sunway College.
Part of the Sunway Education Group, Sunway University and Sunway College are owned and governed by the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, a not-for-profit entity dedicated to providing educational opportunities for deserving students.
To date, the foundation has awarded more than RM210mil to thousands of deserving students.
Also present at the ceremony were Sunway University vice-chancellor Prof Graeme Wilkinson and deputy vice-chancellor Prof Pua Eng Chong as well as Sunway College Australian University Programme head Greeja Hemalata.
