Electrostatic discharge can cause fire
We are all made up of a balance of positive and negative charges. By nature, all matter must have a balance of charges.
When we rub against our car seat, we create an imbalance of charges and become either positively or negatively charged.
When we touch the petrol nozzle, the charges in the nozzle will enter the body to balance us out and become neutrally charged.
This exchange is static electricity and commonly felt as a spark. The spark may ignite gas fumes and cause a re.
Staying safe while refuelling
Do not re-enter the vehicle while pumping petrol.
if you do re-enter, make sure you ground yourself by touching something metal like the side of your car before handling the nozzle.
if static causes a re, leave the nozzle in the ll pipe and back away. Call for help.
