NEW YORK: Samsung has unveiled the much-awaited Galaxy Note 7 which comes with an iris scanner, unlocking the device with just your eyes – the world’s first for a smartphone.

Revealed for the first time to audiences at the Galaxy Unpacked event in New York, the 5.7 inch phablet features a dual curved display, a feature it inherits from the S7 Edge.

Samsung skipped a number in introducing the Note 7 to align its product portfolio with the S series, which currently stands at seven.

Another feature which takes after the latest S series is that it is water-resistant, but it has been improved to allow users to write on the screen with the S Pen stylus even when the display is wet.

The S Pen has seen other notable improvements, including a smaller tip (0.7mm) and increased sensitivity to pressure, making the task of writing seamless and precise.

“The Note 7 combines productivity and entertainment with strong security features,” said Samsung Electronics’ president of mobile communications business D.J. Koh at the launch, which was done simultaneously in London and Rio de Janeiro.

“Powering a robust ecosystem, the Note 7 is the ideal device for those who want to achieve more in life.”

The device also has a 12-megapixel dual-pixel rear camera and five-megapixel front-facing camera. Other features include a 3,500mAh battery and quick charging capabilities using the new USB-C port, a first for a Samsung device.

The Note 7 can also be paired with the new Gear VR powered by Oculus, allowing users to experience virtual reality anytime and anywhere.

It is also compatible with Samsung’s Gear 360 camera which allows users to capture, edit and share 360° images and videos.

The Note 7, which will be available in Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx, is expected to hit our shores on Aug 19 for RM3,199 each.

A total of 4,000 units will be available for pre-order online from Aug 8 to 10.
