Unattended bag causes a stir in busy Bangsar

- KUALA LUMPUR:

A bag, initially thought to contain explosive substances, turned out to be a hoax as it was filled with just clothes.

In allaying public fear, City police chief Comm Datuk Amar Singh said that nothing dangerous was found inside the bag which was left unattended at an intersection of Jalan Terasek 8 and Jalan Telawi in Bangsar by a resident.

“There is nothing. This shows that we are very alert and on top of things,” he said, adding that it was a false alarm and was of no threat to the public.

The prompt action by the police to cordon off the area as a precautionary measure drew praises from residents.

Bangsar is one of the areas being closely monitored by security forces for signs of a terrorist attack.

Later at the Bukit Jalil police station, Comm Amar Singh said police destroyed 11,525 computers seized during raids on illegal online gambling dens.

He added that the computers were from 814 cases disposed of previously and worth an estimated RM22mil.

“From January to July this year, we have carried out 1,134 raids on illegal online gambling premises with 2,531 arrests and seizure of RM206,378,” he said.

On Op Nyah 2, out of the 163 people screened, 25 illegals were detained on Tuesday.

Police also arrested four men, including a habitual snatch thief, who was out on bail, in Jalan Conlay here.

Comm Amar Singh said the 21yearold suspect was involved in snatching the bag of a 20yearold law student on June 12 in Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

The student fell and suffered numerous injuries during the incident near a church, which was captured on CCTV footage and went viral.

Police believed that the four suspects were behind 13 snatch theft cases.
