Ex-navy officer fined for accepting RM1.5mil in bribes

IPOH: A former Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Lieutenant-Commander was fined RM100,000 by the Sessions Court here after he pleaded guilty to six counts of corruption involving more than RM1.5mil. The money was also seized.

Judge S. Indra Nehru ordered Lt-Kmdr Khairul Izwan Mohd Khair, 38, to serve a 12-month jail term if he could not settle the fine.

She also ordered the forfeiture of the RM100,000 bail and seizure of cash amounting to RM1.4mil and a watch worth RM19,000.

Khairul Izwan was among four RMN officers charged with corruption-related offences involving millions of ringgit last year. They had all claimed trial.

On Sept 9 last year, Khairul Izwan, who was the Material 2 control officer at the RMN Armada Supplies Depot at the RMN base in Lumut, was charged with receiving cash and a debit card totalling RM1.5mil.

On Sept 14, he was charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court with receiving the RM19,000 watch from a contractor. This case was then transferred to the Ipoh Sessions Court.

He committed the offences between May 2013 and February 2015, which are punishable under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, on Feb 2 last year, one individual received orders from Khairul Izwan, asking him to open a bank account without giving him a reason.

He told him that money would be banked into the account and gave the individual permission to use the money.

Shortly after that, RM1.4mil was deposited into the account in four transactions.

The RM1.4mil was a bribe given to Khairul Izwan to secure supply projects at the naval base.

Another RM100,000 was banked in and later handed over to Khairul Izwan as a gesture for a spare parts supply deal.
