Chong: We need to remedy poor performances
Ministry to look into weak results in schools after implementation of KSSR
PETALING JAYA: The drop in students’ performances in SJKC and SJKT schools following implementation of the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR) will be looked into, said Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon.
He said he would bring the matter up for discussion at the ministry level.
“I take this seriously and will seek a full report from the ministry as to whether the statement by Jiao Zong is right,” he said after the Nanyang Siang Pau scrap book contest launch yesterday.
Jiao Zong is the United Chinese School Teachers’ Association of Malaysia.
Three days ago, China Press quoted Jiao Zong as saying that the performance of Chinese primary school students in main subjects, including Mathematics, had declined after the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR) was implemented about six years ago.
Chong said if the results had dropped, the Ministry would need to find out why and take remedial measures.
On the National Unity and Integration Department’s suggestion to introduce a multi-religion subject in schools to strengthen unity and harmony, Chong said he would raise the matter with the relevant authorities.
The suggestion to introduce the subject was made at the 2016 Interfaith Forum jointly organised by a department under the Prime Minister’s Department and the Committee to Promote Inter-Faith Understanding and Harmony recently.
Chong, however, pointed out that there were already too many subjects taught in school and the Ministry’s target was actually to reduce the number of subjects.
