Singaporean jailed for helping to dispose of body
JOHOR BARU: A Singaporean was sentenced to six years’ jail by the Sessions Court here for abetting in the disposal of a dead body two years ago.
Businessman Noriskandar Zainal Yahya, 38, pleaded guilty to the charge before Sessions judge Kamarudin Kamsun here yesterday.
According to the charge sheet, he had helped his friend, carpet washer Izwanuddin Kassim, 36, dispose of the charred body of Yong Boon Cheong, aged 56, between 5.30am and 5pm on July 4, 2014.
Noriskandar had committed the offence in Jalan Skudai near Danga Bay here, and Rizab 13, Kampung Sri Paya Darat in Batu Pahat, with the intention of helping another accused person hide the murder.
He was charged under Section 201 of the Penal Code, which provides a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.
Noriskandar, together with Izwanuddin, had initially been charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder on July 27, 2014.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Taufik Saberi prosecuted while lawyer Mohamad Isa Mohamad Basir represented the accused.
Judge Kamarudin ordered Noriskandar to serve a six-year jail term starting from the day of his arrest.
It was reported that Yong’s charred remains were found in Parit Raja after he was murdered in Jalan Skudai here.
Yong, who was involved in plastic manufacturing, was last spotted arguing with a man and woman near his home in Polo Park, Taman Iskandar.
Before the court went into session, Liew Wei Kiat, 39, a Chinese daily photographer, was pushed to the ground by Noriskandar as he was being led into the courtroom.
Liew suffered minor injuries.
