Pupil struts his dancing skills

SEN Wei Sam was simply unbeatable at the Negri Sembilan Internatio­nal Dancesport Championsh­ip held in Port Dickson last Sunday.

The nine year old talented lad from Seremban won an astounding 11 gold and one bronze medal at the meet.

Wei Sam who is a Year Three pupil in SJK(C) Kelpin in Rasah, Seremban, outshone older children as he emerged as the Under-9 as well as the Under-12 champion in the samba, rumba, cha-cha and jive discipline­s.

In addition he also won the gold in the Inter-schools Beginners’ Juvenile Under-9 cha-cha and jive, as well as the Solo Interschoo­ls Under-9 cha-cha and also a bronze medal in the Solo Inter-schools Under-9 jive. Wei Sam has been training under Joyous DanceSport Academy principal May Chean since he was a Year One pupil. His favourite dance is the cha cha.

“To keep myself constantly energised, I eat rice and oranges to keep on dancing all day long.

“I have also competed in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore,” he said.

The dance competitio­n was organised by the Joyous DanceSport Academy in collaborat­ion with the Negri Sembilan Education Department and Malaysia Ballroom Dance Council and recognised by the Education Ministry.

The one day meet saw a total of over 430 participat­ing dancers, ranging from the Under-6, Under-9, Under-12, Under-17, Amateur and Open categories with dancers coming from Russia, China, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

Championsh­ip organising chairperso­n May Chean said: “I am happy our dancesport meet has been endorsed by the state education department and the ministry.”

“This is in line with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013 -2025 to strike a balance between knowledge and skills,” she added.
