‘Don Tiger’ leader killed

Gang boss and three members shot dead in gunfight with police

IPOH: The leader of the notorious “Don Tiger” gang and three of its members met with a bloody end in a shootout with the police while trying to evade arrest near Jalan Tambun here.

The four suspects, high on the police wanted list, were shot dead at about 10.50pm on Thursday when they opened fire at policemen in a bid to escape in a stolen grey Honda Accord.

Perak deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan said police had to defend themselves when the driver refused to stop the car.

He said one of the suspects fired at a patrol car along the main road of Jalan Tanjung Rambutan before speeding off towards the Tambun main road.

“When the policemen tried to approach, the front passenger of the car fired another shot, and the policemen returned fire in selfdefence.

“All the four suspects, aged between 20 and 30, have criminal records. The gang has been active in the Ipoh and Kampar districts,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters yesterday.

DCP Hasnan added that police were looking for more of the gang’s members.

He said initial investigations showed the group had been responsible for several armed robberies, breakins, vehicle theft, fights and threats using firearms.

He said the gang had been active since August last year, and a special taskforce was formed to track it down after a money changer in Kampung Rapat near here was robbed of RM313,000 and harmed on Aug 27.

He said the gang members had also tried to mow down a traffic policeman during a roadblock in December last year, and were also involved in the robbery of a hypermarket, getting away with RM16,000.

“After the four were shot dead, police recovered an automatic Remington Colt .45 pistol, an air gun, two parang, a plastic bag containing syabu, a cutter, an iron rod, handphones and a bundle of keys,” he said.
