Gavin takes first step towards US PGA Tour dream

-

PETALING JAYA: Golfer Gavin Kyle Green is set to his first tentative steps towards his US PGA Tour dream next week.

The 22-year-old, fresh from securing a spot in next month’s CIMB Classic after winning the SapuraKencana National Classic on Thursday, left for the United States yesterday to compete in the first stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying School (Q-School).

The Web.com Tour is a development event for the PGA Tour.

Gavin will compete at the Dayton Valley Golf Club in Nevada from Sept 27-30. It is one of 12 qualifiers to be held in the US, with more than 900 golfers set to take part.

Gavin is almost certain to earn his Asian Tour ticket for next season as he’s now second in the Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit, courtesy of two victories and seven top-10 finishes.

The top five ADT money earners at the end of the season will earn promotion to the Asian Tour.

But world No. 259 Gavin is seeking to widen his options by also making it to the Web.com Tour.

“It’s always been in the plan to try and qualify for the Web.com Tour,” said Gavin, who represented Malaysia at the Rio Olympics last month.

“If I succeed, then I can play in both Asia and the US. It’s going to be tough, but I’m well prepared for it. My immediate goal is to clear the first hurdle.”

Gavin had made a strong bid for a European ToAfter the Web.com Tour Q-School, Gavin will join compatriots Danny Chia and Nicholas Fung in the Indonesian Masters from Oct 6-10.
