Young minds all charged at meet
IT’S exciting times for the power and energy sector in the world as it seeks new technologies to innovate the power systems and meet the challenges of climate change.
The buzz was palpable at the Second IEEE-Power & Energy Society Student Congress (PESSC) 2016, which saw over 100 representatives from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering - Power and Energy Society (IEEE-PES) student chapters of various countries across the globe congregating in Putrajaya recently.
Their aim was to discuss and collaborate on various issues in the power and energy industry, from renewable energy, electricity generation, distributed generation, energy efficiency, smart grid to emerging technologies.
As congress chair Dr Md Pauzi Abdullah from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s Electrical Power Engineering Department put it, the PESSC 2016 was a real “amalgamation of young minds”.
With renowned speakers in various fields related to power and energy, the congress gave the participants a firsthand insight into the current theories and practices of the industry. Crucially, said the participants, they got the chance to improve their technical skills and expand their professional network.
Best of all, it wasn’t all presentations and discussions at the PESSC 2016 as the participants got to visit Tenaga Nasional Research Sdn Bhd where they had the opportunity to observe and learn about new technology research.
It was also not all work and no play either for the students as they were given a taste of Malaysia’s vibrant diversity at various cultural events and sightseeing trips to Kuala Lumpur and the country’s administration centre in Putrajaya.
The PESSC 2016 was organised by the IEEE-PES in collaboration with the IEEE-PES student chapters of Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; and the support of Tenaga Nasional, Sher Engineering and Consultancy, Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Institute of Engineering and Technology, MNC CIGRE and the Tourism and Culture Ministry.
