Giant DNA helix sculpture using jeans makes it into MBR
PETALING JAYA: A 531m-long DNA double helix structure formed out of over 1,000 pairs of jeans has made it into the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR). It was created by Universiti Malaya (UM) students at the “Jeans for Genes Malaysia 2016” campaign.
The annual campaign that started six years ago aims to increase awareness of genetic disorders, especially those affecting children, and also to raise funds for patients afflicted with the disorder.
The creation was awarded the “Longest Jeans DNA Double Helix Chain Formation” title by MBR.
The activity, which was conducted in conjunction with the campaign, was held at UM’s Dewan Tunku Canselor yesterday.
Jeans for Genes Malaysia director and campaign organiser Dr Azlina Ahmad Annuar said the sculpture was the world’s first double chain DNA helix using denim jeans.
“A lot of people supported the campaign.
“Some of them showed up on the day of the event bringing even more jeans.
“We wanted to do something different where it will be more meaningful and significant for the public to help the organisation raise funds,” she said.
She added that getting donations will be made easier with the sale of the jeans, rather than asking people for money.
“During the campaign, the visitors mingled with some of the genetically-affected people. This will help more people to learn about genetic disorders,” she said.
MBR office manager Lee Pooi Leng said the record was the first ever created of its kind.
“A project like this requires a lot of hard work and effort as they had to get various parties and sponsors to help,” she said, adding that it took her over an hour to measure the giant DNA helix sculpture.
Lee also called on the event organiser to apply for a place in the Guinness World Records.
