Criminal killed by cops in gunfight.

IPOH: An man wanted for various offences, including attempted murder, has been shot dead by police at Simpang Lima, Pekan near Manjung.

The 29-year-old man died from three gunshot wounds when policemen returned fire after he attacked them.

Perak Criminal Investigat­ion Department head Senior Asst Comm Datuk Gan Tian Kee said a police crime prevention team was on patrol in the Ayer Tawar area when they noticed the man in a Proton Waja behaving suspicious­ly at around 3.15am.

“When police approached the car, the suspect immediatel­y sped off along the road leading to Sitiawan.

“The policemen chased him for about 3km and at Simpang Lima, he lost control of his car,” SAC Gan told a press conference here.

He said that as the police were walking towards the crashed vehicle, the suspect scrambled out of the car and started shooting at them.

“The police were forced to return fire with three shots, killing him on the spot,” he said.

SAC Gan also said police recovered a pistol, five bullets, a bullet magazine, a parang and two mobile phones.

“We also found that the suspect had five previous cases on his record, including for drug possession, causing grievous hurt using a firearm and attempted murder at Kampung Tun Sambanthan in Ayer Tawar in 2013.

“The suspect, who is from Ayer Tawar, was believed to have been an active in the Sitiawan and Lumut areas.

“We are still investigat­ing whether he was involved in any gang,” he said.

In Johor Baru, the body of a carpenter with slash marks – believed to be a murder victim – was found dumped in a ditch along Jalan Paloh-Yong Peng near Batu Pahat.

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Wahid Musa said the victim, identified as Anuar Abd Shokor, 50, was reported missing by his wife on Thursday.

He said the victim, wearing a dark blue long pants and white shirt, was found lying in the ditch by passers-by about 100m from Jalan Besar Paloh-Yong Peng.

“The wife last spoke to the victim at 12.36am on Thursday. He told her he was going to Tanjung Laboh to fish,” he added.

Initial investigat­ion showed there were three slash marks on the victim’s head and arm. His wallet was also missing.
