Kids learn about saving trees
TEAM Green Rangers worked with a group of 107 children from SJKT Jalan San Peng to create awareness on the importance of saving trees, tree planting and saving the environment.
Team leader Shamala Mary Arokiasamy said there was a tremendous response from the children.
“Our topic of the day was ‘Trees Are My Friend’.
“At the end of the session, we conducted a pop quiz session for the students and gave away 100 goodie bags with school stationery and 50 free tree saplings from four different species to the children and teachers to be planted at home,” she said.
This activity, she added, was a collaboration between the team, the school and the Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur.
Shamala Mary explained that she was a part-time student from Wawasan Open University
“I am currently involved in a co-curriculum project as part of my university module, which is to carry out an environmental activity which consists of three phases.
“We have named our environmental project as ‘A Journey of Saving the Environment’. My team consists of 11 members and we are known as the Green Rangers,” she said.
Working with the children was the team’s second phase, she said, adding that the first phase involved working as volunteer gardeners at the Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur.
“We learnt the right way on planting and caring for trees from the society’s president Baida Hercus.
“It was a fun learning experience before we continued with our next phases,” she added.
Shamala Mary said the third phase would involve giving free trees to the community at Aeon Taman Maluri Shopping Centre on Oct 22. This, she added, was a collaboration between the Green Rangers, the shopping cenre and the Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur.
