Attaining goals through teamwork

IT took a week of brainstorming and careful consideration before students -- Sharifah Yasmin Syed Hatim, Nur Dini Dayana Abdul Rahim, Wan Nur ‘Alya Nabilah Wan Arman and Wan Nur Fatini Wan Mazlan -- formulated the best concept to use in their PSA poster.

Using football as an example, their poster illustrated how teamwork among players can lead to attaining goals and success.

The SMK Dato’ Ahmad Maher Team 5 Sina 6’s take on this year’s NiE contest theme, highlighting sports and unity, earned them a spot as the team with the best PSA entry in Kelantan.

Nur Dini Dayana said the PSA was inspired by the much-loved Ola Bola movie.

“We used that concept because it came very close to what we wanted to portray in our poster -- with unity, we can achieve success.”

It was a proud moment for the students as they received the Outstanding Award at a ceremony in their school in Kota Baru.

Sharifah Yasmin said that it was an unexpected win for them.

“We never thought of winning. It made us feel very happy because we know it is very hard to win this national contest.”

Having taken part in the NiE contest since 2008, the students were anything but new to the NiE contest.

“The first contest we took part in was Mag Inc, where we had to create a mini magazine. We have been exposed to this contest for a long time. This is the first time we won something!”

She also added: “I hope The Star will continue this programme for years to come. It is fun and beneficial for students like us.”

The school’s principal Mohd Zamri Abdul Aziz presented the four Form Five Science stream students with the award plaque on behalf of Star Media Group.

Supervising teacher Suhaida Mohd Shafii said it was a feat for the team to come up with ideas that were universal and accepted by Malaysians.

“They had to think hard and brainstorm on the theme of sports and its uniting factors for all despite colour, creed or religion.

“I must thank our panel teachers and head of the English panel led by L. Vimaladevi, Miz Safinaz Hussin and Nik Norhayati Nik Hashim,” she told The Star.

Mohd Zamri said he was very much involved in the school’s campaign in promoting English language proficiency and public speaking among its 1,200-strong student population.

Mastering English, is definitely an asset while public speaking helps boost one’s confidence and persuasive skills and the ability to think critically and network with others, he added.
