PETALING JAYA: Win With Words 2016 is proving to be more than just a word challenge as far as participants are concerned.

Contestants are taking part to relive the nostalgic days of playing word games and, for some, to improve and test their vocabulary.

Housewife Susan Wong, 51, who has been a loyal reader of The Star for nearly 30 years, joined the contest as she enjoys playing Scrabble.

“Now, my children have all grown up and they just don’t have time to play Scrabble any more. So, this is a good replacement,” said Wong, who renewed her bundle subscription and collected an additional 500 points for the contest at the Atria Shopping Gallery here.

Wong also revealed that she had been seeking help from neighbours and friends for copies of the newspaper every day just to collect “more letters”.

Wong, who is participating in the contest for the first time, has already submitted 2,000 words for the first series.

“Although I didn’t manage to win any prize, I have no intention of slowing down. There is still a good chance in the third and last series.”

For administrative executive Mei Sum, 27, the main purpose of taking part was to improve her English.

“I have been reading The Star since my school days. Now, I want to test my vocabulary again after so many years,” she said after collecting 500 points for renewing her e-Paper subscription.

Carly George, 35, who is an avid fan of word games, took part in the contest for the first time.

“I like playing word games such as Scrabble and Boggle with my family during our free time.

“We also like participating in writing slogans and quizzes,” said the entrepreneur, hoping for a chance to win the grand prize of the new Kia Sportage car.

The coming roadshows will be at Mahkota Parade in Malacca and Queensbay Mall in Penang from Oct 14-16.

The final roadshow will be held at AEON Tebrau City in Johor Baru and I Luv Coffee & Tea Expo at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre from Oct 28-30. By signing up for The Star Bundle or ePaper at any of these roadshows, subscribers will get an extra 500 points.

This is also applicable for those renewing or adding another year of paper subscription.

Subscribers also stand a chance to win one of the five lucky subscriber prizes which include a 4D/3N holiday package to Krabi, Thailand, for two persons and a 40-inch full HD flatscreen TV.

Win With Words 2016 is organised by Star Media Group in conjunction with its 45th anniversary celebration, with IJM Land Bhd and official car partner Naza Kia.

There are four series to the contest. The third – The Light Series – will run until Oct 16.

The first prize winner of each series and six lucky participants from across all the series will then take part in the Grand Finale Challenge which will be held on Nov 29 at the venue partner 1Utama Shopping Centre.

Attractive prizes worth over RM480,000, including two cars, are up for grabs in the contest.

In addition, 45 lucky participants for each series will walk away with RM500 as part of The Star Anniversary Bonus Prize.
