Jamal cries ‘double standards’ over arrest at airport
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos called his arrest by the police “double standards” and wants the authorities to be fair in their action.
Speaking outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday, the leader of the Red Shirts group said that although he understood the police’s responsibility in ensuring public order, he still could not accept the action.
“It’s double standards and an insult to me. Just imagine my wife’s feelings, especially my children, seeing their father arrested and handcuffed just after coming out of the arrival gate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
“I do not deserve that. Therefore I declare war against Bersih and will mobilise the Red Shirts movement nationwide to fight Bersih,” he said.
Jamal, who was released on police bail at about 5pm after being remanded for two days, said police should also arrest those from Bersih.
“It’s unfair how the Bersih people are being treated fairly and none of them got arrested despite holding four demonstrations trying to topple the Government which was democratically elected. Now, they’re going to hold their fifth protest.
On Wednesday, Jamal was detained over violence allegedly directed at Bersih supporters by his Red Shirts group, said CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh.
Jamal was detained at KLIA when he returned from Dubai on Wednesday, to assist investigations into the incidents in Teluk Intan and Sabak Bernam.
Jamal was investigated under Section 500 and 503 of the Penal Code for defamation and criminal intimidation as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.
On Oct 11, a police report was lodged against Jamal over a Facebook post allegedly threatening a repeat of the May 13, 1969 racial riots.
He denied the post was made by him and said it came from a fake account.
Several other police reports have been lodged against him and the Red Shirts.
