V Shem-Wee Kiong march on, Vivian-Khe Wei bow out
One pair played brilliantly. The other suffered a meltdown.
Yesterday, Olympic silver medallists Goh V ShemTan Wee Kiong marched into the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the Denmark Open in Odense Sports Park, but it was all over for top women’s doubles shuttlers Vivian HooWoon Khe Wei.
V ShemWee Kiong continued their fine form by beating England’s Marcus EllisChris Langridge 2118, 2117 in a 46minute secondround match.
In the opening round on Wednesday, they downed China’s newlyformed partnership of Zhang NanLiu Cheng 2118, 1821, 2118.
V ShemWee Kiong will take on China’s Li JunhuiLiu Yuchen next.
The eighthseeded JunhuiYuchen were in dominant form in the last two Superseries in Japan and South Korea.
World No. 8 JunhuiYuchen lifted the Japan Open title last month, but lost to homesters Lee YongdaeYoo Yeonseong in the final in South Korea.
Wee Kiong was happy to have made the last eight, but admitted that their mission is far from over.
“We’re satisfied with our performances here so far. We have a quite a challenge against the Chinese youngsters tomorrow,” said Wee Kiong.
“They are in good form. We need to keep it solid and stay focused ... our goal is to reach the final, at least.”
The Malaysians have yet to reach a Superseries final and are hoping to break the duck at the Denmark Open.
While V ShemWee Kiong shone with their performance yesterday, VivianKhe Wei were the total opposite – dishing out a limp display to go down 1321, 1921 to Bulgaria’s Stoeva sisters – Gabriela and Stefani.
“We really played bad ... it wasn’t our usual game at all. Hopefully, we will do better at the French Open next week,” said Vivian.
