Dad dies, child hurt in crash

Man loses control of lorry and plunges into ravine near a farm

IPOH: A two-year-old toddler lost his father when the lorry they were in fell into a ravine near a farm in Ulu Tekom, Brinchang.

The Sunday tragedy killed Woo Hon Meng, 36, who was behind the wheels. Apparently, the lorry went out of control due to faulty brakes.

A passing motorist alerted the police at around 5pm.

The body was handed over to the police while the child was sent to Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom, said Cameron Highlands OCPD Deputy Supt Hasadid A. Hamid.

The child suffered injuries to his right eye and lips. He also fractured his right hand.

The child had been transferred to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for further treatment.

Early investigations showed that when Woo neared the ravine, he lost control and hit the side of a cliff on the right. The lorry then veered to a lower side on the left where it came to a bend and crashed into the ravine, which is about 15 to 18m deep.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death.
