SINGAPORE: The Sultan of Selangor Cup between Selangor and Singapore will return to the island republic for the first time in seven years.

Organising committee chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said the match will also be played at the new 55,000-capacity National Stadium on May 6 next year.

“The 2017 Sultan of Selangor Cup will be the 16th edition and we’re very happy that Singapore will be hosting the match between the two most successful sides in Malaysia Cup history,” Abd Karim said after presenting the Cup to Singapore head of delegates Teo Hock Seng at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) here yesterday.

The Sultan of Selangor Cup has been held at the Shah Alam Stadium for the past seven years. Singapore beat Selangor last year.

“I believe that both sets of fans will be looking forward to the match between Selangor and Singapore as both teams have a great rivalry ... especially during the heyday of Malaysia Cup.

“We are discussing with the Selangor Fan Club to provide between 100 and 120 buses to ferry our fans to Singapore for the match,” said Abd Karim, who also pointed that, for the first time in its history, there would also be an Under-15 game between Singapore and Selangor.

Hock Seng expects more than 25,000 fans to turn up for next year’s match at the National Stadium.

“The veterans from both teams are very excited to play at the new stadium, which has been built on the grounds of the old National Stadium in Kallang here,” he said.

Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is expected to grace the event with Singapore President Tony Tan.
