Landslide area remains risky due to underground water flow

-

HULU SELANGOR: Round-theclock remedial work at the landslide-hit Taman Idaman, Serendah, have shown no more soil movement.

Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt R. Supramaniam said, however, that underground water flow was present and the whole area remained at risk.

“We are working 24 hours nonstop. Sheet piling is being done to stabilise the area affected by the landslide.

“So far, we have pulled out two cars and a motorcycle from the landslide.

“And we are working to get the remaining vehicles out,” he told a press conference near the scene yesterday.

He said 25 families or 128 residents were staying at the nearby Sekolah Rendah Agama Serendah, while 32 families were staying on their own elsewhere.

“However, people from seven families have yet to report to us.

“Perhaps they went off to stay with their family members for the time being.

“But they should register with us, so that we can keep track of them.

“We will not allow the public to enter the red zone due to the potential danger,” he said.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar said the Federal Government would work with the state government to ensure the residents’ safety and well-being.

“If the area is deemed unsafe, we will look at providing the residents with options for new housing, either by monetary assistance to build a house or relocate them to a low cost housing area,” he said during a visit to the disaster-hit area yesterday.

He said he would consider the possibility of setting up temporary houses made from cargo containers if necessary.

“It is an option but I have to bring it up to the Cabinet,” he said.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who also visited Taman Idaman yesterday, assured that efforts were being made to secure the area so that the 340 residents could return home safely as soon as possible.

“The Public Works Department is working round the clock to sheet pile the relevant area to stop the soil from moving further.”
