KL and Police are frontrunners to qualify for Sultan’s Gold Cup final

PETALING JAYA: Klang Valley sides Kuala Lumpur and Police are the frontrunners to qualify for the Sultan’s Gold Cup final.

The City boys are in the driver’s seat to qualify for only their third final after edging Pahang 1-0 in the first-leg of the semi-finals at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan on Saturday.

KL are looking to bring home the Cup after 22 long years.

“We have qualified for the final twice since the inaugural tournament in 1922. We were champions in 1994 (beating Perlis 2-1), but lost to Penang (5-0) in our first final in 1986,” said KL team manager Syed Yazid Syed Omar.

KL will be powered by three Premier League players – Helmi Remeli, Muhd Hafiz Mohd Johar and Zhafri Yahya – when they host Pahang in the second leg of the semi-finals at the UKM Mini Stadium in Bangi tomorrow.

Police, who edged Kedah 3-2 in the firstleg of the semi-finals, will find the going tough when they play the return leg at the Darulaman Stadium in Alor Setar.
