Recognised for green efforts
UNIVERSITI Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has been listed as the world's 58th best university for campus sustainability and environmental management.
Based on a ranking initiative led by Universitas Indonesia, the UI-Greenmetric World University Rankings involved 516 universities from 74 countries.
UMP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Daing Nasir Ibrahim said the position of UMP rose 131 rungs compared to 189th spot last year.
“The latest achievement is a challenge to UMP’s management to double its campus greening efforts for the benefit of university staff and students,” he said in a recent statement.
He said the ranking system comprised the evaluation of six main elements namely Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation and Education while UMP had also implemented an additional criteria on 'Healthy Lifestyle'.
Prof Daing Nasir said to date UMP had carried out more than 30 greening projects and initiatives including the planting of plants and trees.
“Apart from that, there is a greening initiative with the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) on a 2.25ha site at its campus in Pekan while on another 1ha site, UMP and FRIM planted fruit trees,” he said.
He said the greening efforts of UMP were not limited to tree-planting activities as they also involved water and waste management, transportation and education.
“For the purpose, UMP had set up composting and recycling centres, recycling of domestic waste water, sale of used items, hazardous waste store and nine sewerage treatment plants,” he said. – Bernama
