Leave Selva Kumar alone, says Penang CPO
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Convicted serial rapist Selva Kumar Subbiah should be left alone and allowed to get on with his life if he decides to return to his hometown, said state police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye.
“He has already served a 24-year jail term in Canada so it is not right to punish him again.
“We will keep an eye on him if he does come back to Penang and there will be no restriction on him to move around,” he told a press conference after launching the 2017 Jom ke Sekolah (Let’s Go to School) programme in SMK Taman Sejahtera here yesterday.
Comm Chuah said that at the moment, there’s no paedophile or sexual offender registry in the country and as such, Selva Kumar is an ordinary citizen.
“I’ve been told that he will return to Malaysia but not Penang. He will be interviewed by the police on his plans after he returns to Malaysia,” he added.
Selva Kumar, 57, was convicted at two separate trials more than two decades ago of drugging and sexually assaulting 30 women.
Meanwhile, Wanita MCA chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie hit out at DAP Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh for playing down the wing’s call for a sex offenders registry as a safeguard against the return of Selva Kumar as a contravention of the Federal Constitution.
Heng, who is adviser on national unity and integration in the Prime Minister’s Department, urged Ramkarpal to read Wanita MCA’s statement in full as their stand was clear, constructive, and neither unprecedented nor uncalled for.
She said he missed the wing’s point about enacting laws so that Malaysians who committed sex offences overseas are made to face charges back home.
“We had cited British courts of sentencing serial paedophile Richard Huckle to 22 life sentences for paedophilia committed in Malaysia.
“We may not be the top constitutional lawyer or expert, but we know it is our duty to protect our people,” she said.
