Eating well is about eating seasonally, ultimately.

GEORGE TOWN: Fresh flowers arranged in boxes are the in thing this Valentine’s Day, which falls on Tuesday.

Eden Floral & Gift Centre owner Seah Chin Eng said the trend popularised by recent Korean and Chinese dramas has caught on locally.

“In the shows, characters are seen presenting flowers in boxes to their loved ones and my customers have been asking me to do the same for them,” she said when met at her outlet in Burmah Road here.

Seah said one or two dozen roses can be packed in each box, costing RM200 and RM360 respectively. The blooms can last up to a week.

Her business partner Lau Yok Wan said the shop also offers soap roses and scented artificial flowers in an array of colours.

Most florist shops here reported that orders started coming in since Thursday.

G-Ray Florist owner Rayean Lim said that although she received some orders for floral arrangements in boxes, her customers preferred hand-held bouquets.

She said both types cost RM200 or more.

“As Valentine’s Day approaches, we expect to work long hours beginning at 4am to prepare about 200 bouquets so that they can be delivered on time.

“We are also bringing in more fresh flowers from Holland, China, India and South Africa to meet demand,” she said.

Lim added that her shop also promotes bouquet arrangements online via its website, Facebook page and Instagram account.

She said although people tend to buy more flowers on Mother’s Day than Valentine’s Day, the period around Feb 14 is still hectic for her.

A visit to the Niceday gift shop in Prangin Mall saw several soap flower bouquets with LED lights installed being sold at RM163.90 each.

The store’s marketing manager Steven Khoo said each bouquet has more than two dozen soap flowers.

“We stocked up on a variety of soap flower bouquets with the LED lights from China and started selling them last week.

“We expect sales to pick up nearer to Valentine’s Day,” he said.
