Schools get a spruce up
DHL has taken part in a series of activities as part of its Global Volunteer Day 2016 initiative in Malaysia.
Over 500 volunteers, including DHL employees, several fellows, alumni and staff members from Teach For Malaysia (TFM) and 80 students took part in an effort to teach children about responsibility and teamwork, while enhancing their learning environment.
DHL Malaysia employees from all the various business units including DHL Express, DHL
Supply Chain and DHL Global Forwarding gathered on separate occasions throughout October and November, to refurbish three secondary schools.
Together, they painted the classrooms, spruced up gardens and school walkways and trained students of SMK Jeram in Selangor, SMK Taman Mount Austin in Johor Baru and SMK Mak Mandin in Prai on communication skills.
Additionally, DHL Malaysia also donated more than 500 books collected from over 19 DHL offices and service centres in the country. These activities created a platform for each volunteer to work together while demonstrating their can-do attitudes and commitment to serve the community.
Jotun Paints (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. supported the cause for the second year running, by co-sponsoring a total of 300 liters of paint for SMK Taman Mount Austin and SMK Mak Mandin. This was double the volume of paint sponsored in 2015.
DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Christopher Ong said: “DHL is committed to giving back to the communities that have helped us grow for more than 40 years.”
“We started working with Teach For Malaysia in 2015 and look forward to more collaborations in the years to come.
“We aim to provide a better learning environment for our future generations.
“Our efforts with Teach For Malaysia for Global Volunteer Day this year stems from our desire to give back to our local communities and inculcate a passion for volunteerism among employees,” he said.
Ong said all DHL employees are encouraged to pledge their personal commitment to giving back to society and ensuring sustainable economic and social development in Malaysia.
Teach For Malaysia co-founder and managing director Dzameer Dzulkifli said: “At Teach For Malaysia, we believe that all students should be empowered to realise their potential, regardless of their background.”
“Our Fellows teach in high-need schools across Malaysia, to be part of the solution to the challenges faced by our students today. We are excited to have public and private sector partners and supporters like DHL Malaysia working with us toward a common goal; to invest in our collective future, and create real and lasting transformation in our schools and communities,” he said.
