LUNDU: The people of Tanjong Datu should send a clear message to the Opposition that they are not welcome in the constituency.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin claimed that the Opposition only knew how to play up issues and cast aspersions on others because they wanted to bring down the Barisan Nasionalled Government.

“The Barisan government has actually done what is best for the people.

“For example, if you go to a government clinic or hospital, you only need to pay RM1.

“But some people will still find something to blame the Government for.

“We only think about what we want and not what we already have,” he told reporters after opening an entrepreneurship and consumerism seminar at the community hall here yesterday.

However, Hamzah said villagers in Tanjong Datu understood what the Government had done for them.

“I am confident that voters here will continue to give their support to Barisan,” he added.

The Tanjong Datu seat fell vacant when Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem passed away on Jan 11.

Barisan’s candidate Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, who is Adenan’s widow, is facing PBDS Baru’s Rapelson Richard Hamit and State Reform Party Sarawak’s Johnny Bob Aput in a three-cornered fight.

On a separate issue, Hamzah said his ministry was addressing the shortage of subsidised cooking oil in certain areas by taking over the payment to repackers of the commodity.

He said that previously, there was a slight technical problem as the payments were made by a different ministry and some of the repackers did not have sufficient rolling capital to supply the cooking oil.

“All payments will be made by my ministry and we will try to speed it up.

“We will also address the issue as and when it occurs by sourcing cooking oil from places where there is sufficient supply to areas facing a shortage,” Hamzah said.
