Wee Kiong’s done his bit, now shifts focus to the All-England

-

ULU KINTA: Tan Wee Kiong will shift his focus to the All-England after he accomplished one small mission at the National Championships.

The Olympic Games silver medallist was tasked with guiding his younger partner Ong Yew Sin and the 27-year-old Wee Kiong did a good job – they both landed the men’s doubles title at the Sri Perdana Hall yesterday.

Unseeded Wee Kiong-Yew Sin stayed solid to beat second seeds Tan Chee Tean-Tan Wee Gieen 22-20, 21-18 in 37 minutes and walk home with RM30,000.

It was Wee Kiong’s third national title after having won twice with Hoon Thien How in 2012 and 2013 while it was the 22-year-old Yew Sin’s first.

“I didn’t have to guide Yew Sin much. Yew Sin used his height to play well from the back court. We adjusted well,” said Wee Kiong.

“He can go far with his partner Teo Ee Yi. They have improved.”

Wee Kiong will now work on his partnership with Goh V Shem. The world No. 1 are the top seeds at the All-England in Birmingham from March 7-12.

He has not played with V Shem so far this year. Wee Kiong missed the Malaysian Masters in Sibu due to a shoulder injury in January while V Shem withdrew from the National Championships because of a swollen ankle.

“We are the All-England top seeds for the first time ... that’s a great feeling. We can go far if we focus on our game,” said Wee Kiong.

“V Shem’s injury is not serious. We hope to get our combination in order again as we’ve not played together in competitions since winning the World Superseries Finals in Dubai,” said Wee Kiong.

Wee Kiong and V Shem will take on Japan’s Takuro Hoki- Yugo Kobayashi in the first round of the All-England.

Last year, they lost to Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa in the semi-finals.
