Massive task awaits organisers
Preparations are already underway for the hosting of the world final in Kuala Lumpur
MALAYSIA will play host to one of the biggest amateur tournaments anywhere this year. The event is the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) that will run concurrently with the World Amateur Golfers Invitational (WAGI) in Kuala Lumpur from November 21-24.
Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays Sdn Bhd managing director Isac Saminathan said they were excited about the prospect of staging such a huge tournament and added that they looked forward to the challenge that lies ahead.
“This annual tournament is the culmination of qualifying events held around the globe and brings together the winners in the world final. Last year it was held in South Africa.
“Such is the magnitude of the tournament that we envisage hosting more than 500 golfers from some 45 countries. These players will be accompanied by their family and spouses, and as such, the event will be a big boost for our tourism sector,” added Saminathan.
“With this, we have sought assistance from the Ministry of Youth &Sports and the Ministry of Tourism and have received favourable response.
“We can also report that the Ministry of Finance has expressed similar sentiments and our sponsors and prospective sponsors will be afforded tax exemptions for the support of the world final.
“This is most encouraging for us and we would like to appeal to all sectors of commerce and industry to come forward and assist us to make the event one that will leave our visitors impressed and locals proud of a job well done,” he said .
Saminathan added: “The field at the world final comprises VIP golf enthusiasts, managing directors and CEOs, professionals, business leaders, sponsors and others from all corners of the world.
“Also, both the WAGC and WAGI tournaments are played under separate categories and fully comply with United States Golf Assocition (USGA) and Royal & Ancient (R&A) rules.”
Explaining some of the mechanics of how the world final will be run, Saminathan said that before the final itself starts there will be two practice rounds and that four golf courses will be used to host the showdown.
“Of those we have earmarked for the world final, we can confirm that the Mines Golf Club will be one of them,” he said. “We are still in discussion with a few others and we will make announcements in due course once things have been finalised in that regard.”
Saminathan also said they would line up a programme to promote Malaysia for the visiting non-golfers and for those who intend to extend their stay.
