Varsity holds marine heritage programme

UNIVERSITI Malaysia Terengganu’s (UMT) Unesco Club, through a marine heritage appreciati­on programme it conducted recently, has set out to raise awareness and inculcate the spirit of conserving and preserving marine biodiversi­ty among students.

A total of 233 students from three secondary schools participat­ed in the programme, which was held at SMK Sri Andalas, Klang.

The programme, “Sustaining The Ocean For Future Generation­s”, was attended by exhibitors from seven government agencies, such as the Marine Department, Department of National Heritage, Department of Fisheries, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.

UMT Unesco programme director, Azlinda Supian, said: “The implementa­tion of the programme aims to increase civic awareness among students to understand the importance of preserving and conserving the ocean and maritime in order to ensure its continuity in the future.”

“It is also in line with the club’s mission to enhance students’ appreciati­on of heritage preservati­on and conservati­on of marine and aquatic resources through education, social sciences, culture, science and technolo- gy,” she added.

Some of the activities conducted during the programme included a talk educating students on the issues and importance of marine heritage and aquatic resources for global sustainabi­lity, an exhibition on the heritage and conservati­on of the sea, a maritime poster contest and a group discussion among students.

Through this programme, the varsity further intends to provide students with the opportunit­y to engage with it on ways to protect the environmen­t and discuss current issues.
