Varsity holds marine heritage programme
UNIVERSITI Malaysia Terengganu’s (UMT) Unesco Club, through a marine heritage appreciation programme it conducted recently, has set out to raise awareness and inculcate the spirit of conserving and preserving marine biodiversity among students.
A total of 233 students from three secondary schools participated in the programme, which was held at SMK Sri Andalas, Klang.
The programme, “Sustaining The Ocean For Future Generations”, was attended by exhibitors from seven government agencies, such as the Marine Department, Department of National Heritage, Department of Fisheries, Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
UMT Unesco programme director, Azlinda Supian, said: “The implementation of the programme aims to increase civic awareness among students to understand the importance of preserving and conserving the ocean and maritime in order to ensure its continuity in the future.”
“It is also in line with the club’s mission to enhance students’ appreciation of heritage preservation and conservation of marine and aquatic resources through education, social sciences, culture, science and technolo- gy,” she added.
Some of the activities conducted during the programme included a talk educating students on the issues and importance of marine heritage and aquatic resources for global sustainability, an exhibition on the heritage and conservation of the sea, a maritime poster contest and a group discussion among students.
Through this programme, the varsity further intends to provide students with the opportunity to engage with it on ways to protect the environment and discuss current issues.
