PETALING JAYA: His dog had apparently bitten some shoes and the man put it in a narrow cage, made a small fire and put the cage over it.

He then posted a video of it together with a photograph of what appeared to be the carcass of a dog burnt to cinders.

His post was shared widely on Facebook on Saturday, causing outrage among dog lovers.

Someone named Loh Lee Kuan posted on Dog Lovers of Malaysia Facebook page, asking: “Can we do something?”

“The face of evil,” said Audrey Boudville-Khong in the same group.

There were also threats made against the man, who is from Labis, Johor, which led him to lodge a police report later that day.

When contacted, Segamat OCPD Supt Raub Selamat confirmed the police report.

He said the man had posted a 16-second video clip of him trying to put his dog on fire.

“He tried to scare his dog by putting it on fire, which was not a smart thing to do in the first place.

“Then he posted the video and some pictures, including one that looked like a burnt carcass on the web, which was another silly move by him,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Supt Raub said following the man’s action, which provoked anger on social media, netizens tracked him down and harassed and threatened him and his family.

“We have gone to his house to check whether the dog is still alive and I am happy to say that it is in a good condition.

“We also warned him not to repeat what he had done,” he added.

The man could not be contacted for comments.

In an interview with a Chinese daily’s portal, the man apologised and said the dog was still alive.

He went on to say he was using fire just to frighten the dog and not harm it and that he had lifted the picture of the dead dog off the Internet and posted it in jest.

The man also said he had received threats from as far as Australia.

His wife also posted a video of the live dog, which she claimed was recorded after her husband’s post had gone viral.
