Home joy for family living under flyover

KUALA LUMPUR: Ramadan joy has come early for Sabahan odd job worker Jeffry Hussin and his family – they will soon have a place to call home.

For the past three weeks, eight members of the family have been living under a flyover along the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 in Pandan Perdana near Cheras.

After their plight was highlighted in The Star yesterday, various agencies and Good Samaritans have come forward to offer assistance in the form of cash and goods to the family.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) also sprung into action by offering a rental for a People Housing Project unit in Desa Tun Razak for a monthly rate of RM124.

Jeffry, 41, was moved to tears when Pandan MCA chairman Datuk Leong Kok Wee and Umno Youth information chief Jamawi Jaafar handed over DBKL’s offer letter to him.

“I want to thank everyone for getting us out of this place,” said Jeffry as he wiped his damp eyes.

The former security guard and his family were evicted from their unit in the Low Cost 700 flats here after failing to pay rent for the past two months.

The rental was RM500 monthly and the landlord allegedly refused to accept Jeffry’s offer to settle it in instalments and had even called him names.

Jeffry, his wife Siti Nor Sazila Zakaria, 30, and their children Siti Nurfadhilah, eight, Siti Nurfatihah, six, Nur Farisha Alesha, four and nine- month- old Nur Cahaya Adawiyah had lived in the rented flat for the past 11 years.

Jeffry’s sister Nuriana, 38, and her husband Roslan Rahman, 40, were also staying with Jeffry after Roslan lost his job as a waiter.

All eight of them will be put up at the Sabah Government Liaison Office hostel in Taman Cheras Indah until the electrical supply and the paperwork are done by Monday.

Leong, who highlighted the matter after seeing the family living in dire conditions, thanked DBKL for its swift action and the public for its generosity.

Throughout the day, many people dropped by to offer their personal contribution, food, water and necessities to the family.
